Powerful Portraits Explores the daily freedom we forget to celebrate.
In 2017 I painted a series of works „Boson” called after Boson of Peter Higgs, a particle known from physics. In layman meaning, of the Boson is something which makes particles together, and therefore makes that everything have mass. So it is something that makes things, what they are. The particles without masses fall into a pole/interact with it and already they have mass, varying mass and become different things. I connected this thing with reflections about the human condition and realized that „freedom” is our Boson – freedom makes us who we really are. We can not be truly ourselves when we are not free. The first painting from series „The flower of Fern” explores this. „Black and White play” shows the darker side of freedom, when we have to make a difficult decision, sometimes between worse and the worst. Making every decision by yourself, even that extremely difficult, we don’t want to, make us truly free – when You let someone else doing it for you, lose an important part of you. These reflections lead us to third painting from series „Too sweet to be serious” which concentrates on self-accepting. „Double freedom” and „Paradox” explores the idea of freedom in the context of relations with loved persons. Could be truly free when we love and when someone’s happiness depends from us? The last one „The lady of time” shares theme of the most overwhelming and irresistible power – of passing time. This painting shows a door a key for all contexts – a power of our mind – we are free when we feel free. Freedom is in our mind.
Below is my way of traveling from one painting to another. My reflections, and how my thoughts from one painting wandered to another are located below and took form od diary.
Inspirations for cycle „Boson”
This is not project ended by an exhibition. This is something I found interesting and felt that it is something huge – will be presented, and connected with more than a couple of paintings.
In layman meaning, of the Higgs Boson is something which makes particles together, and therefore makes that EVERYTHING have mass. So boson is something that makes things, what they are. The particles without masses fall into a pole/interact with boson and already they have mass, varying mass and become different things, some of them, do not react, and become the light – without mass.
I heard somewhere, that it glues the universe.
Theory of Elementary particles has been confirmed when Boson was proved that exist. It has been proven that using the Large Hadron Collider.
There is still dark matter and dark energy that are not yet clarified.
I – from painter point of view – an artist – I see it like this: we have particles, and they are only potentially something, there is also the pole / mysterious particle which makes particles different from each other, so in this meaning it creates things. The world is unity, and in a sense, in every particle is contained everything other. In that meaning I’m a bridge in Warsaw, I’m at in Africa, I am a revolver in the belt of villain. In that meaning, there is no „me” and never was. BUT it is too much of ‚philosophy-ing’.
I look at my son, crawling on all fours infant, and I know that boson has something to do with gathering strength, massing character. Because at some point you just grow up and do not care for less important things. You have the strength. You have confidence. You can evaluate, you can choose, and suffer the consequences. You know you can handle. You know that if not, it is not so big drama. And it is also o.k
When I was creating this work I felt that it is the beginning of the new stage. But didn’t know exactly what it was, I was sure it is first from series, and this theme will be with me for a longer time. I just couldn’t formulate it. Flash of inspiration came to me during watching physics program on Sunday morning, about hadron collider. Then everything began to join in together.
Boson is that who you are when you feel free.
Boson is freedom.

But seeing in someone else, that lofty tone, I realized that it sounds a little funny though.

„Freedom is the state of mind”
There are days when I believe in it, without any reservation. There are also days when I hear the same words, from someone else, and I have to question it immediately. The person who speaks, for sure have everything easier, sure this someone has significant help, or didn’t experience any serious problems. Ooo naivety … who says it, will surely find out one day, bad things will catch him and then he will hide his stupid utopian advice in a pocket.
There are people who have a really horrible situation. There are people who you say „freedom is the state of mind”, and it is like to slap them in the face.
But let’s be honest. This is not you. You have a pretty cool life. Those who have a really awful situation are not in majority. Our big „very serious” problems are stupid when we look at them from a distance (do not feel offended, this is positive). And freedom IS the state of mind. Calmness is also the state of mind. You can and should practice it, just as exercise body by running, to run for a bigger distance.

Thoughts about freedom led me to making my definition, what today is it for me. The answer is „Black and White play”.

Freedom is self-acceptance as you are, along with the emotions you have. Because the emotions cannot be controlled, sometimes they are like stinking farts, they are surprising, unfortunately in the unnice way (i am not telling about silent ninja farts). But these are only emotions, everyone sometimes has the ones that are not proud. Sometimes you will never admit it, but our actions prove what we are.
Sometimes it is difficult to admit even to yourself that „I am angry”.
With anger, especially girls, have a problem, they do not allow it to themselves and cover it up by other emotions. Sometimes I’m angry, sometimes something pisses me off. It’s nice to let yourself feel this emotion.

„Boson 4th”
I have the fourth part of the series „Boson” about freedom, done.
There was painting about pure freedom, which is in my opinion factor that makes us who we are – true human – we can not truly be ourselves in captivity – ” The flower of Fern”.
The second was about black side of freedom – difficult decisions – freedom has a black face or a gray zone and sometimes every decision is wrong but giving it to someone else you lose your freedom – a part of your soul/mind – „Black and white play”.
I also looked at freedom as acceptance – being free is to be ourselves – when we are different, and we are not fit into usual standards, but also when we are too ordinary to self-esteem – freedom is acceptance of our innocence and mediocrity.
Now I am presenting painting about love and freedom. I was asking myself what about freedom when your happiness depends on, or is strongly connected with someone?

This is fifth painting from series „Boson” about freedom and its variety of meanings and contexts. This time I asked myself about freedom in context with parenting.
How about freedom, in the context of parenting and the role of the parent? If a parent could ever feel free? Should feel free? Is able to be truly free? What is the definition of freedom of loving parent? Does he/she still need it? Or maybe it is just impossible and becoming a parent you lose it forever?

Here we are „Boson 6”. I am developing this series for over a year and planned to paint 7 paintings in it.
All the works in this series are about freedom but captured each time in a slightly different context. In this painting, I considered freedom in relation to the time. From the passage of time, in my opinion, one of the most powerful thing in the world, we can never be free, but surely? maybe, we have a little influence on how our time runs, on a small daily scale.
